I am gonna start with how much I regret not getting newborn photos done for both of my kids. Back then we were really low on money, stressed, etc. I did not realize I wanted to remember these little things and I wish someone told me that “you will not get these moments back, get the photos done”. As a newborn photographer near Morristown, NJ I take a lot of photos for a lot of. families and I am so happy for them because I know one day they will look at the photos and remember those early days with their new baby.
Now I want to say when you’re in the thick of newborn life, everyone tells you the same thing:
“It goes by so fast.”
And when you’re exhausted, running on little sleep, and adjusting to a whole new version of yourself, that sentence can feel almost annoying. I remember someone told me ” Just enjoy these moments” while I was struggling badly with keeping up with the house, myself and baby+toddler.
So while that’s true – it does go by so fast -it can also feel incredibly dismissive when you’re living it.
Because yes, time goes by too fast…
but it’s also exhausting.
Overwhelming.
Lonely at times.
Two things can be true at once:
- You can cherish these moments
- And still feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water
And that doesn’t make you ungrateful or weak. It makes you human.
Anyway, one day, without warning, things change.
And it’s the smallest things you end up missing the most.
The Way Your Baby Fit Perfectly on Your Chest
There was a time when your baby could curl into you so easily – their whole body rising and falling with your breath.
No schedule.
No distractions.
Just warmth, closeness, and comfort.
Those quiet moments don’t last forever, but they shape everything.
The Tiny Details You Didn’t Think to Memorize
You think you’ll remember them.
But memory is funny that way.
- The way their fingers wrapped around yours
- Their wrinkly feet
- Their tiny eyelashes
- The way their lips looked when they slept
These details fade faster than we expect which is why photos matter so much.
The In-Between Moments
Not the perfectly posed ones.
The real ones:
- Milk-drunk smiles
- Sleepy stretches
- The calm after feeding
- The way they looked at you before they even knew your name
Those moments are easy to overlook until they’re gone.
How New Everything Felt
Your baby wasn’t the only one being born –you were too.
The uncertainty.
The love that felt almost overwhelming.
The quiet pride mixed with fear and exhaustion.
Years later, parents often tell me they wish they had more photos from that stage, not because everything was perfect, but because it was real.
The Newborn Stage Is Shorter Than You Think
Babies grow fast, sometimes faster than we’re ready for.
One day you realize:
- Their clothes don’t fit anymore
- They don’t curl the same way
- They don’t need you in quite the same way
And while that growth is beautiful, it can feel bittersweet.
Why Photos Matter More Than You Realize
Photos aren’t about perfection.
They’re about remembering.
They hold onto the things time quietly takes from us:
- The feeling
- The connection
- The love
As a newborn photographer in Morris County, NJ, I see it all the time- parents who almost skipped photos because they were tired or overwhelmed, and later tell me they’re so grateful they didn’t.
A Gentle Reminder for New Parents
You don’t need:
- A spotless house
- Matching outfits
- A baby who sleeps perfectly
You just need this moment, exactly as it is.
Because one day, you’ll look back and realize these were the days you’ll want to remember the most 🤍
